Sterling Freshman “B” Easily Handle Gander Frosh The Sterling Freshman “B” squad scored early and never looked back in a 26-2 romp over their counterparts from Robert E. Lee Thursday afternoon at Ranger Auxiliary Field. Offensively, the Rangers were led by quarterback Aaron Large, who completed 4 passes for 42 yards. The receiving corps was headed by Spencer Schoor’s 1 catch for 17 yards, followed by Jerry Riley with 15 yards on 2 receptions, and Darwin DeJean, who added 10 yards on 1 catch. In the rushing department, Omar Joseph led Sterling with 85 yards on 5 carries, followed by Aaron Butler with 16 yards on 4 touches, Riley with 14, and Jesse Clark with 8 yards. Sterling jumped out to a lead before the crowd had settled in, as Quintrell Hopkins took the Gander opening kickoff and raced 75 yards down the right sideline for a 6-0 margin only 15 seconds into the contest. The 2-point conversion failed. Lee was immediately halted on their opening drive, as stops by Weston Yaw, Travon Baker, and Hopkins held the Ganders to a total of 6 yards on offense. However, the next Ranger possession ended on a sour note after a 4th down punt resulted in a safety for Lee. Following a snap that rolled past Large into the end zone, he was tackled while trying to escape the Gander defenders, cutting the Sterling lead to 6-2. Though unable to mount an offensive drive on their next possession, the Ranger defenders picked up the slack, and led by Jeremy Winemiller, Jon Guidry, Josh Vickers, Joel Lewis, and Yaw, allowed Lee only 9 yards of total offense on their next 2 drives. Following an interception that gave Sterling the ball at the Gander 31, the Rangers wasted little time, driving the distance in only 6 plays to take a 14-2 lead. With 5:03 remaining before the half, Riley gathered in a pass from Large in the right flat, then zig-zagged his way through the Lee defense into the right side of the end zone for the score. Riley then added the 2-point coversion. After stops by Riley, Lewis, and Yaw held the Ganders to negative -7 yards on their next drive, the Rangers quickly took advantage, driving 56 yards to increase their margin to 20-2. With the exception of a 17-yard strike to Schoor, Sterling relied exclusively on their running game to go the distance, with Large carrying the final yard for the score only 7 seconds before the intermission. The 2-point attempt failed. Though fumble recoveries by Blaine Hines and Brian Sepulveda brought consecutive Lee drives to a premature halt in the 3rd quarter, the Rangers encountered their own offensive difficulties, and were unable to create any type of momentum until their first drive in the 4th stanza, when Large added his second score of the contest, bulling over the Gander defenders for a 1-yard score and a 26-2 lead. The PAT failed. Lee responded with a 5-minute drive in which the Sterling defense bent but refused to break, as stops by Baker, Cody Turney, Oran Moore, Erik Best, Blayde Guidry, Vickers, and Lewis held the Ganders scoreless. The Rangers host Channelview next Friday, October 11th at Sterling Field. |

Sterling Freshman “A” fall victim to high-flying Eagles After jumping out to a 23-6 margin, the Sterling Freshman “A” squad was overcome by a 4th quarter rally courtesy of their opponents from Atascocita, falling 29-23 Thursday evening at Ranger Auxiliary Field. Von Anderson led the Ranger ground game, carrying 22 times for 96 yards, followed by Antwan Jameson’s 47 yards on 10 carries. Craig Sanders added 13 yards on 2 rushes, while John Stuart and Price Jacobs tallied 4 yards apiece. Jose Herrera was Sterling’s leading receiver with 15 yards on 1 catch. The Rangers hit the ground running, relying exclusively on their rushing game during their initial drive. Traveling 55 yards in only 7 plays, Anderson, behind the offensive line of Eric Harris, Kendall Wilkerson, Luis Morin, Clint Welborn, and Joe Arambula, gave Sterling a 6-0 margin following a 5-yard scamper. The PAT by Price Jacobs was good. Jacobs immediately turned thief on the Eagles’ second play from scrimmage, intercepting a 2nd-down pass. However, the Sterling offense couldn’t capitalize and was forced to punt. Atascocita then cut the Ranger margin to 7-6 following a 4-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was blocked. Though penalties brought a premature end to the ensuing Sterling drive, the defense stepped up the pressure on the following Eagle possession, as stops by Tommy Mescalle, McCall Lucas, and Lance Angell halted the Atascocita hopes. The 4th-down punt then spelled disaster for the Eagles, after the snap flew over the head of the punter, who recovered the errant ball but was tackled by Sanders at the 10-yard line. Jameson then gave the Rangers a 13-6 lead on the next play, running over multiple tacklers on his scoring jaunt. Jacob’s PAT was good. The Sterling defenders then turned up the heat and following a 1st-down stop by Lucas, a dropped snap gave the Rangers possession at the Atascocita 30. The drive bogged down in Eagle territory before a 32-yard field goal by Jacobs increased the Sterling lead to 17-6 just before halftime. Following intermission, Sanders brought the Ranger faithful to their feet after recovering an Atascocita fumble on their first play from scrimmage. Sterling then increased their margin to 23-6 following a 37-yard drive, ending with a 10-yard run around left end by Anderson with 6:12 remaining in the third stanza. The PAT was blocked. The Eagles wasted little time slicing into the Ranger lead. Following a kickoff return to the Sterling 37, a 5-yard touchdown run cut the margin to 23-13. Disaster struck on the ensuing Ranger possession, as a fumble was recovered by Atascocita at the Sterling 48-yard line. Stops by Lucas, Shaquille George, and Angell temporarily stalled the drive before a 12-yard touchdown pass and the following 2-point conversion brought the Eagles within 23-21. Unable to establish any offensive momentum, the Rangers punted. A fumble recovery by George gave them new life on the Atascocita 44, but the offense again stalled. The ensuing punt then gave the Eagles their first lead of the contest after the kick was returned 65 yards for the go-ahead score. The 2-point conversion was good, and the visitors led 29-23. Anderson returned the ensuing kickoff to the Atascocita 30, but consecutive incompletions halted the scoring opportunity. Following a defensive stand in which the Eagles were stuffed for negative -4 yards, Sterling found themselves with a final scoring opportunity. Faced with a 4th and 10 at the Atascocita 15, the rush was halted at the Eagle 10-yard line, ending their comeback hopes.

Ranger Frosh “B” start slowly, pull away to defeat Atascocita After going into hibernation for the first 3 quarters, the Sterling Freshman “B” offense scored 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter to take a 16-2 victory over their counterparts from Atascocita on Thursday afternoon at Ranger Auxiliary Field. Quarterback Aaron Large led the offensive charge for Sterling, completing 10 of 19 passes for 134 yards. Large’s targets included Spencer Schoor, who collected 4 passes for 56 yards, 1 toss for 29 yards to Jon Guidry, 2 connections with Brian Sepulveda for 26 yards, Darwin DeJean’s 1 catch for 8 yards, and Jerry Riley, who gathered in 4 receptions for 4 yards. In the rushing department, Riley added 5 yards on 5 carries. The Eagles opened the contest with a clock-eating, 6-minute drive that took them deep into Sterling territory. Facing a 4th-and 2 at the Ranger 7, the defensive combination of Guidry and Jesse Clark halted the Eagle drive, and Sterling took over. Unfortunately, the Rangers first offensive play ended in disaster, as a fumble in the end zone was recovered by Sterling, but the Rangers were tagged with a safety, giving Atascocita a 2-0 lead. Following the free kick, the Eagles set up shop at the Sterling 43, but stops by Trev Mathis and a 4th down quarterback sack courtesy of Tanner Compton allowed Atascocita only 3 yards of offense. The Rangers’ offense sputtered on their ensuing drive, before the 4th down punt snap to Large sailed over his head, and he fell on the ball at the Sterling 38. The Eagles were quickly halted following a stop by Clark, and a 3rd down interception by Will Moore gave the Rangers new life at the Atascocita 49. Still unable to click offensively, Sterling again punted, but received new life on the Eagles’ first play from scrimmage after a fumble recovery by Clark. Though the ensuing drive gained momentum, a 4th-down incompletion gave Atascocita the ball. Then, a 1st-down stop by Clark, followed by another fumble recovery gave the Rangers a final shot at scoring before intermission. However, an Eagle interception at the goal line halted the opportunity. The Sterling defense resumed their stingy ways in the 3rd stanza as an interception by Quintrell Hopkins was returned to the Ranger 40. Unfortunately, the Sterling offense simply couldn’t get untracked and was forced to punt. After allowing Atascocita only 3 yards on their next drive, the Ranger offensive unit came to life. Receptions by Sepulveda, DeJean, and Schoor sparked the unit, and following an 80-yard, 11-play drive, Large connected with Schoor on a 6-yard scoring pass. The PAT failed. Sterling received a golden opportunity on the next play from scrimmage, as Weston Yaw recovered a fumble at the Eagle 15, and the Rangers quickly made Atascocita pay dearly on the following play when Riley raced around left end for the score. Sterling then increased the margin to 14-2 following a 2-point conversion toss from Large to Trey Leday. The Ranger defense then took over, as consecutive Eagle drives ended with Hopkins picking off his second pass of the contest, and an interception by Moore. The Sterling defense then scored the final points of the contest, tackling an Atascocita back in the end zone for a safety and a 16-2 margin.

4th quarter rally leads Sterling Freshman “A” to last-minute victory By Randy Cunningham
It’s been said that good things come to those that wait, and you can bet the Sterling Freshman “A” squad will agree wholeheartedly. Spotting Kingwood a 14-point lead deep into the 3rd quarter, the Ranger offense held off until the final 10:22 of the contest to score 17 unanswered points, wrestling a 31-28 season-ending victory from the Mustangs Thursday evening at Stallworth Stadium. Quarterback Von Anderson gave another stellar offensive performance, rushing 17 times for 171 yards, while adding another 68 yards through the air on 3 completions. Antwan Jameson bulled his way for 104 yards on 12 carries, while Craig Sanders carried 3 times for 8 yards, and Vince Allen contributed 6 yards on 3 carries. Price Jacobs carried the receiving load, gathering in 1 pass for 61 yards. Kingwood struck first in the contest. Though stops by defenders Tommy Mescalle, Shaquille George, McCall Lucas, and Jacobs temporarily slowed their opponents, the Mustangs drove 90 yards for the score, a 1-yard run around right end. The 2-point conversion failed. The future looked even more grim moments later on the ensuing kickoff, as Kingwood recovered a Sterling bobble at the Ranger 48. Two plays later, the Mustangs made Sterling pay dearly for their mistake, taking a 12-0 lead following a 45-yard scoring pass. The 2-point conversion was successful, and the Rangers found themselves in a deep 14-0 hole. Though the skies over Stallworth were completely clear, lightning struck in the Rangers’ favor on their next offensive possession, when Jameson took a handoff from Anderson and ran through the middle of the Kingwood defense before cutting left and easily outdistancing his pursuers on a 45-yard scamper for a 14-6 margin. The PAT failed. The Mustangs then chewed up almost 6 minutes of the second quarter clock in the midst of an 11-play drive, while Lucas, Jacobs, John Stuart, and Lance Angell contributed defensive stops in an effort to halt their progress. Facing a 4th-and-goal at the Ranger 4-yard line, Stuart personally guaranteed the Mustangs would not add to their lead, as he leveled the ballcarrier at the 3-yard line and brought the scoring opportunity to an abrupt halt. Sterling immediately responded to the challenge, and featuring their massive offensive line of Eric Harris, Kendall Wilkerson, Luis Morin, Clint Welborn, and Joe Arambula, the Rangers relied totally on the ground efforts of Anderson, Jameson, and Allen to tie the score following a 97-yard march. With 45 seconds remaining before halftime, Anderson charged around the right side of the Kingwood defense, dragging tacklers with him into the end zone at the completion of a 21-yard scoring run. Jameson then tied the contest at 14-all as he scored on the 2-point conversion. The Mustangs struck first in the third stanza, taking a 22-14 lead following an 8-yard scoring run and the ensuing 2-point conversion. The Ranger offense couldn’t get untracked on their next possession, and Kingwood took advantage on their next drive, traveling 65 yards in 11 plays and increasing their margin to 28-14 following a 1-yard quarterback sneak. Making matters worse, a Sterling fumble on the ensuing kickoff returned the ball to the Mustangs. However, the miscue seemed to light a fire under the Ranger defense, who chose the perfect opportunity to hold Kingwood to a total of 3 yards on the drive. Led by the defensive efforts of Allen, Mescalle, Lucas, and Angell, the Mustangs were forced to punt. Starting at their own 5-yard line, Sterling brought the fans to their feet with an electrifying 4-play, 95-yard drive to cut deep into the Kingwood lead. Following a 33-yard scramble by Anderson that moved the offense out of the shadow of their own goal line, Anderson then connected with Jacobs on a 61-yard scoring toss. Flushed out of the pocket, Anderson scrambled left before heaving a pass in the direction of Jacobs, who reached over 2 Mustang defenders for the ball, then outraced both into the end zone for the score. Jacobs then personally cut the Kingwood lead to 28-21 with the PAT. The ensuing kickoff was downed at the 1-yard line, and stops by Lucas and Mescalle led to a quick ending of the Mustang drive. The Rangers drove to the Kingwood 8-yard line before the offense sputtered to a halt. With 2:45 remaining in the contest, Jacobs then converted a 28-yard field goal to reduce the Mustang lead to 28-24. Miraculously, the ensuing kickoff bounced between the Kingwood defenders and into the waiting arms of George, who collected the ball in stride before being downed at the Mustang 25. Three plays later and facing a 1st down at the Kingwood 12, Anderson took the snap, started left, then reversed his field before weaving his way through the defense and somersaulting into the left side of the end zone for the winning score with 1:35 remaining in the contest. Jacobs then added the PAT for the final points of the evening.

Sterling Frosh “B” grinds out victory over Kingwood By Randy Cunningham
The Sterling Freshman “B” squad squared off against a tough Kingwood team and ended their season on a high note following a 20-6 victory over the Mustangs Thursday afternoon at Stallworth Stadium. Aaron Large led the Ranger aerial attack, completing 9 of 18 passes for 122 yards, while Joe LaCour added another 70 yards on 3 connections and Jerry Reily tossed 1 pass for 22 yards. The receivers were led by Charles Simpson and Darwin DeJean with 67 yards apiece, followed by Spencer Schoor with 4 catches for 44 yards, Trey Leday with 33 yards on 3 receptions, and Cameron Bickers with 1 reception for 5 yards. The Sterling ground game was headed by Large’s 35 yards on 6 attempts, with Schoor and Aaron Butler adding 13 yards apiece, while Reily and Leday ran for 5 and 1 yard respectively. Following defensive stops by Rosevelt Howard and Blaine Hines, the Ranger offense wasted little time after setting up shop on the Kingwood 40, driving the distance in only 5 plays. Facing a 3rd and 9 at the Mustang 19, Large connected with Simpson in the left corner of the end zone for a 6-0 lead. The 2-point attempt failed. Consecutive Kingwood possessions ended prematurely for the Mustangs, as an interception by Jeremy Winemiller, along with stops by defensive stalwarts Demarcus Leblanc, Will Moore, Howard, Weston Yaw, Juan Villareal, and Jon Guidry ended any Kingwood scoring hopes. After a Mustang punt gave Sterling the ball at their own 33, the combination of LaCour and DeJean increased the Ranger margin to 12-0 following a 67-yard scoring toss. Taking LaCour’s pass over the middle in stride, DeJean then weaved his way to the left sideline, outrunning all the Kingwood defenders for the touchdown. LaCour then connected with Reily on the 2-point conversion for a 14-0 margin. The Mustangs then responded with their only scoring drive of the contest, an 8-play, 62-yard march to cut the Sterling lead to 14-6. Stops by Trev Mathis, Yaw, Cody Turney, Guidry, and Prince Reed momentarily slowed Kingwood before a 26-yard touchdown pass gave them their only points. The 2-point conversion failed. Following the intermission, the Ranger offense sputtered on their first drive, yet a defensive stand led by Hines, Jesse Harris, and Kade Prince allowed the Mustangs only 5 yards. Taking over at their own 47, Sterling then embarked on a time-consuming, 12-play drive to add to their lead. Mixing their ground game and air attack behind the offensive line of Taylor Clark, John Cumbie, Kelton Harmon, Boston Lesjak, and Nick Espinoza, they increased their lead to 20-6 after LaCour tossed his second strike of the contest, connecting with Leday on a 5-yard score. The 2-point conversion failed. The remainder of the contest featured highlight-reel efforts from the Ranger defense, as they refused to allow Kingwood any additional points. While Winemiller added a 2nd interception to his total, Villareal, Guidry, Mathis, Joe Mireles, Hines, Leblanc, and Prince all contributed to a defensive effort that limited the Mustangs to a mere 119 yards rushing for the contest.
